It is very common for us to find evidence of critters, rodents or birds during our inspection process. Sometimes we are even surprised by the actual critter. I have found evidence of mice, squirrels, snakes, raccoons and birds.

Most of the time this is a minor problem, only evidence of a nest in the attic and the fix is remove the nest and repair the gable vent. In some cases, it is a significant expense that may require removal of all the insulation, electrical wiring repair and health issues. This typically happens with squirrels and raccoons.

All rodents; mice, rats, squirrels look for a warm place, they look for shelter during the winter months because they are warm blooded animals. This is why most invasions happen during the cold weather. Birds are different, they look for a place to build their nest. All of the them, will come back after to invade again or reuse the nest in their new home.

Investigation Phase – If you suspect you have rodents or critters in you home, look for the following signs;

  1. Droppings; Mouse droppings about the size of a grain of rice, rats are about the size of a raisin. Where to look, on the top side of ceiling tile or along the top of the foundation near the sill plate.
  2. Chew marks; Rats, mice, and squirrels gnaw or chew on wood, electrical wiring, drywall. Look for evidence around cracks, corners and small holes or any through the exterior wall penetrations.
  3. Squirrels and Raccoons; These animals destroy and are typically in the attic space. You should hear them as they scurry around. You can look from the attic scuttle for evidence of nuts (squirrels), destroyed insulation, animal feces’, or straw/grass nests.

If you do find evidence of any of these conditions, do not come in contact with the rodents, critters or birds as they all carry various diseases. Contact a pest management provider immediately so they can help you resolve the issue.

Best Defense –  Steps you can take to prevent access to your home.

  1. Inspect all entry points or through the wall penetrations. The top areas are the following; A/C lines, electrical service, gable vents and around the soffits. The garage door left open of poor sealing is another great location.
  2. Keep vegetation, shrubs, vines trimmed away from walls. Also keep the mulch 4-6 inches from siding.
  3. Store all food in tightly sealed containers.
  4. Keep trash cans sealed tight, even with bungee cords.
